Chinese New Year in NYC

2008 marks the Year of the Rat for the Chinese New Year, which will be celebrated in the city on February 7th. To kick off the festivities, a firecracker ceremony and cultural festival will run from 11 am to 3 pm. The firecrackers are lit to ward off evil spirits before the cultural performances take to the stage. Enjoy performances from singers and dancers to dragon, unicorn, and lion troupes marching the streets of Chinatown.

The best part of the celebration will take place on February 9th, when the 9th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade will ring in the new year. From 1-5 pm, magical floats, marching bands, musicians, magicians, acrobats, and dragon troupes will amaze audiences. After the parade, there will be even more fun with a cultural festival on the streets with more performances.

If you’ve never experienced a Chinese New Year celebration before, make this the year!

New York City’s 2008 Off-Broadway Season

January 25th, 2008 by susan j

New York City is world-renowned for its incredible theater scene. Millions of tourists flock to the Big Apple from all over the world to see shows on the Big White Way (in fact, I had one very memorable theater marathon where I saw Ragtime, Miss Saigon, and four other blockbuster musicals in just six days!).

However, it’s worth noting that there are plenty of funny, inspiring, and otherwise entertaining options playing Off-Broadway, too. These shows feature cutting edge playwrights in intimate venues, emerging actors before they get their big break, and established veterans who are returning to their theatrical roots. Depending on the show, it can be easier (and cheaper) to score tickets, too.

For more information on Off-Broadway shows, read Playbill.com takes a look at the 2008 Off-Broadway season. Or check the current Broadway and Off-Broadway listings. Whatever your taste in entertainment, chances are you’ll find it in NYC!

Travelers Love the NYC Public Library

New York City Public Library
The New York Public Library Reading Room

Photo uploaded by victoriapeckham

There’s been some buzz about the New York Public Library recently, ranging from press in The New York Times to our blogging friends over at The New York City Traveler.

It’s not just an incredible resource for New Yorkers, but it’s also a great spot to stop and marvel at. From special art exhibitions on John Milton to Kerouac’s draft of On the Road, there’s plenty to see. The architecture of the building itself, in a Beaux Arts style, includes white marble facing and gloriously large reading rooms.

So, the next time you’re in the city, look for the magnificent lion statues outside the library in Midtown and stop in for a visit. There’s even a special discount at the library shop, courtesy of your Explorer Pass.

Of course, New York City isn’t the only city with a great library system. To read about the Boston Public Library, check out our Boston travel blog.

Waterfalls Tour Add to NYC Landscape

January 21st, 2008 by jamie a

Building off of the success of Christo’s “The Gates,” the newest art project for the city of New York will be four giant waterfalls cascading into the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The Scandinavian artist Olafur Eliasson has been commissioned to build the falls which are expected to contribute $50 million to the economy of the city. ‘New York City Waterfalls‘ will be on display from mid-July to mid-October and will even be illuminated in the evenings.

We’re excited about this great new attraction in the city, building off the natural beauty of the water to create a stunning new artwork. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition against the skyscrapers and steel structures of the city, giving NYC a taste of the wonders of nature.
