Union Square Theatre’s 2007 production of Mayuma Photo uploaded by grittycitygirl
New York City is world-renowned for its incredible theater scene. Millions of tourists flock to the Big Apple from all over the world to see shows on the Big White Way (in fact, I had one very memorable theater marathon where I saw Ragtime, Miss Saigon, and four other blockbuster musicals in just six days!).
However, it’s worth noting that there are plenty of funny, inspiring, and otherwise entertaining options playing Off-Broadway, too. These shows feature cutting edge playwrights in intimate venues, emerging actors before they get their big break, and established veterans who are returning to their theatrical roots. Depending on the show, it can be easier (and cheaper) to score tickets, too.
For more information on Off-Broadway shows, read Playbill.com takes a look at the 2008 Off-Broadway season. Or check the current Broadway and Off-Broadway listings. Whatever your taste in entertainment, chances are you’ll find it in NYC!

New York City’s famous Fashion Week is coming up February 1-8. Although this week-long frenzy of runway shows and papparazzi is not open to the general public, you still get in on the action and feel like one of the fashion elite with a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Now through April 13, the Costume Institute on the museum’s ground floor features a special exhibit made possible by none other than fashion icon Manolo Blahnik. Titled blog.mode:addressing fashion, the exhibit showcases some forty costumes and accessories from the 1700’s to the present and invites visitors to share their thoughts online or through a “blogbar” in the exhibit galleries. The New York Public Library Reading Room
Photo uploaded by victoriapeckham
There’s been some buzz about the New York Public Library recently, ranging from press in The New York Times to our blogging friends over at The New York City Traveler.
It’s not just an incredible resource for New Yorkers, but it’s also a great spot to stop and marvel at. From special art exhibitions on John Milton to Kerouac’s draft of On the Road, there’s plenty to see. The architecture of the building itself, in a Beaux Arts style, includes white marble facing and gloriously large reading rooms.
So, the next time you’re in the city, look for the magnificent lion statues outside the library in Midtown and stop in for a visit. There’s even a special discount at the library shop, courtesy of your Explorer Pass.
Of course, New York City isn’t the only city with a great library system. To read about the Boston Public Library, check out our Boston travel blog.

Building off of the success of Christo’s “The Gates,” the newest art project for the city of New York will be four giant waterfalls cascading into the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn.
The Scandinavian artist Olafur Eliasson has been commissioned to build the falls which are expected to contribute $50 million to the economy of the city. ‘‘ will be on display from mid-July to mid-October and will even be illuminated in the evenings.
We’re excited about this great new attraction in the city, building off the natural beauty of the water to create a stunning new artwork. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition against the skyscrapers and steel structures of the city, giving NYC a taste of the wonders of nature.
