Now that the weather finally is warming up, a visit to one of New York City’s greenmarkets is the perfect way to explore the city’s neighborhoods. You’ll find organic produce, farm fresh dairy, and homemade goods. Several of NYC’s outdoor markets, including Union Square Greenmarket, operate year-round, but others (like the Borough Hall Greenmarket and Sunnyside and Astoria Greenmarket) are open seasonally.

In celebration of National Garden Month, you can also stop by the 2008 NYC Grow Garden Festival in Union Square Park on April 27 for more on local produce and gardening.

Shakespeare in the Park is the classic New York City experience. Thus, it’s fitting that the Public Theater chose a classic Shakespearean drama and a classic contemporary musical for its 2008 summer season.

Directed by Oskar Eustis, Hamlet runs May 27-June 29. Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical (a classic in my book), which is directed by Diane Paulus, performs July 22-August 17.

Both shows run Tuesday through Sunday at 8 pm at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park. Tickets are free and will be available on the day of the performance beginning at 1 pm. Check out the Public Theater’s website for more details.

You’ll work up a pretty hearty appetite trying to hit all of New York City’s must-see attractions, so our pals over at the new travel website GoGirlfriend have compiled a list of restaurant recommendations for the busy traveler.

From the glitz and kitsch of Lucky Cheng’s in the East Village (also pictured above) to the retro charm of Empire Diner in Chelsea, these ladies certainly have eclectic taste. And none of their choices are terribly expensive, either, so you’ll still have money leftover for sightseeing. Check it out!

New York City’s 2008 Off-Broadway Season

January 25th, 2008 by susan j

New York City is world-renowned for its incredible theater scene. Millions of tourists flock to the Big Apple from all over the world to see shows on the Big White Way (in fact, I had one very memorable theater marathon where I saw Ragtime, Miss Saigon, and four other blockbuster musicals in just six days!).

However, it’s worth noting that there are plenty of funny, inspiring, and otherwise entertaining options playing Off-Broadway, too. These shows feature cutting edge playwrights in intimate venues, emerging actors before they get their big break, and established veterans who are returning to their theatrical roots. Depending on the show, it can be easier (and cheaper) to score tickets, too.

For more information on Off-Broadway shows, read Playbill.com takes a look at the 2008 Off-Broadway season. Or check the current Broadway and Off-Broadway listings. Whatever your taste in entertainment, chances are you’ll find it in NYC!
