NYC Project RunwayProject Runway at Macy’s Photo uploaded by cloverity

If you’re a fan of the Bravo television show Project Runway (as I certainly am!) Budget Travel has just the tour for us.

They’ve plotted out a guide of 10 Project Runway related spots to see, including Bryant Park, Mood Designer Fabrics, and Parson’s New School of Design. There’s also bars, like the Buddha Bar and Pink Elephant, where the contestants have been lured, only to be presented with their next seemingly-impossible challenge.

If you’re not a fan of the show, but love fashion just the same, they’ve also put together a list of 10 New York Fashion Favorites. The list includes everything from the Fashion Walk of Fame and the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute to Femmegems and Girls Love Shoes.

You can also check out our post ‘Fashion Forward at the MET Museum,’ which details the current exhibits at the museum.

Chinese New Year in NYC

2008 marks the Year of the Rat for the Chinese New Year, which will be celebrated in the city on February 7th. To kick off the festivities, a firecracker ceremony and cultural festival will run from 11 am to 3 pm. The firecrackers are lit to ward off evil spirits before the cultural performances take to the stage. Enjoy performances from singers and dancers to dragon, unicorn, and lion troupes marching the streets of Chinatown.

The best part of the celebration will take place on February 9th, when the 9th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade will ring in the new year. From 1-5 pm, magical floats, marching bands, musicians, magicians, acrobats, and dragon troupes will amaze audiences. After the parade, there will be even more fun with a cultural festival on the streets with more performances.

If you’ve never experienced a Chinese New Year celebration before, make this the year!

New York City’s 2008 Off-Broadway Season

January 25th, 2008 by susan j

New York City is world-renowned for its incredible theater scene. Millions of tourists flock to the Big Apple from all over the world to see shows on the Big White Way (in fact, I had one very memorable theater marathon where I saw Ragtime, Miss Saigon, and four other blockbuster musicals in just six days!).

However, it’s worth noting that there are plenty of funny, inspiring, and otherwise entertaining options playing Off-Broadway, too. These shows feature cutting edge playwrights in intimate venues, emerging actors before they get their big break, and established veterans who are returning to their theatrical roots. Depending on the show, it can be easier (and cheaper) to score tickets, too.

For more information on Off-Broadway shows, read Playbill.com takes a look at the 2008 Off-Broadway season. Or check the current Broadway and Off-Broadway listings. Whatever your taste in entertainment, chances are you’ll find it in NYC!

November, David Mamet’s New Play

January 16th, 2008 by jamie a

Building on the hype of this years’ primaries for the presidential elections, David Mamet’s new play, November, follows a current president who’s about to lose his election bid. This new play stars Nathan Lane as Charles H.P. Smith, a president who’s in his last week in office with an approval rating in the single digits.

Mamet, in an interview for the New York Times said,” I was shocked, after Iowa, to find myself thinking, Well, you know, if there were the two candidates, McCain and Obama, either of them would probably make a hell of a president.” He’s thrilled that his show is opening when it is, tackling today’s tough current events.

To add a new twist to this show, Mamet will be keeping a blog as Charles H.P. Smith for the duration of the show’s run. We’re especially excited that the world of blogging is being used as a new venue of communication between actor and audience, inviting us into the world of the fine arts.

So, with all the excitement of the primaries surrounding you, why not join in the fun?
