NYCvisit.com has named the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem the “Cultural Organization for the Month of February!”

The Apollo Theater has been the home of so many incredible performers since opening in 1914 on 125th Street. Its Amateur Night performances include winners like Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder. The theater has launched the careers of countless others, among them are Billie Holliday, Bessie Smith, Michael Jackson, and Lauryn Hill.

In 1983, the theater was given national, city, and state landmark status and still offers an average of six events per week.

Celebrate Black History Month with a historic tour of the building, a stop at the museum store for a special souvenir, and then attend Amateur Night to see the best in up-and-coming talent!

TripAdvisor.com recently published an article on the “Top Ten Places to Pop the Question,” including spots in the Big Apple, making New York City the only contender with two places on the list.

They write that “There is no better place to offer up your heart than the heart of Manhattan, Central Park. With a number of different venues to profess your love — be it on a bridge, a secluded patch of grass, among a crowd, in a boat, or on an ice rink — Central Park is the one-stop-shop of romantic proposal locales.”

As for the Empire State Building, TripAdvisor says, “Feel on top of Manhattan while proposing at the observation deck at the Empire State Building, home to legendary movie proposals. With spectacular 360-degree views, make the moment happen in style at the world’s most famous skyscraper.”

Roxanne, director of special projects over at the New York Transit Museum, alerted us to some great upcoming events in a comment on our blog. Thanks for reading, Roxanne!

From February 12 through June 1, 2008, the exhibit A Railroad Reborn: Metro-North at 25 will be shown at the museum’s Grand Central Station Gallery Annex and Store. This exhibit celebrates what the introduction of the Metro-North railroad meant for commuters to the city. Since 1983, this railroad has been helping revitalize the entire industry and is very proud to be celebrating its 25th anniversary.

On February 26th, join the museum for a free lecture entitled “It’s Electric” on the historic AC electrification of the railroad from 6:30 - 8 pm. The lecture will be held on the Northeast balcony of Grand Central Terminal. The lecture will talk about the first regular train to be operated by electric power which traveled from Grand Central Station to New Rochelle in 1907 along with current evolutions and reconstructions in the system.

Travelers Love the NYC Public Library

The New York Public Library Reading Room

Photo uploaded by victoriapeckham

There’s been some buzz about the New York Public Library recently, ranging from press in The New York Times to our blogging friends over at The New York City Traveler.

It’s not just an incredible resource for New Yorkers, but it’s also a great spot to stop and marvel at. From special art exhibitions on John Milton to Kerouac’s draft of On the Road, there’s plenty to see. The architecture of the building itself, in a Beaux Arts style, includes white marble facing and gloriously large reading rooms.

So, the next time you’re in the city, look for the magnificent lion statues outside the library in Midtown and stop in for a visit. There’s even a special discount at the library shop, courtesy of your Explorer Pass.

Of course, New York City isn’t the only city with a great library system. To read about the Boston Public Library, check out our Boston travel blog.

Waterfalls Tour Add to NYC Landscape

January 21st, 2008 by jamie a

Building off of the success of Christo’s “The Gates,” the newest art project for the city of New York will be four giant waterfalls cascading into the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The Scandinavian artist Olafur Eliasson has been commissioned to build the falls which are expected to contribute $50 million to the economy of the city. ‘New York City Waterfalls‘ will be on display from mid-July to mid-October and will even be illuminated in the evenings.

We’re excited about this great new attraction in the city, building off the natural beauty of the water to create a stunning new artwork. It’s a beautiful juxtaposition against the skyscrapers and steel structures of the city, giving NYC a taste of the wonders of nature.

Our fellow bloggers over at Newyorkology recently posted about the new home of the Museum of American Finance in the former headquarters of the Bank of New York.

As they proclaim on their site, the museum is “the nation’s only independent public museum dedicated to celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurship and the democratic free market tradition which has made New York City the financial capital of the world.”

This museum is thrilled to re-open in their new locale, which gives them 30,000 square feet of space along with an opulent banking hall, education center, auditorium, library, and research facility. Its new location also puts the museum in the heart of what they teach visitors about, being a fantastic resource to New Yorkers and tourists alike.
