Snow Storm in NYC

Photo uploaded by x-eyedblonde

Brace yourself, tourists and New Yorkers! A coastal storm is traveling through the Northeast and could possibly cover the city in heaps of snow. A winter storm watch is currently in effect, but the snow is projected to taper off today.

Be sure to keep yourself updated on the status of the MTA, as well as JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports.

A few weeks ago, New York magazine ran a series of short articles on “Reasons to Love New York Right Now.” These 50+ reasons ran the gamut, from cultural (Because You Can Never Finish Seeing the Metropolitan Museum of Art) to quirky (Because Your Foot Can Make You Famous) and literal (Because Broadway is Back) to literary (Because Our Kids Love Books). I thoroughly enjoyed this amusing tribute to the Big Apple, so check it out!

Feel free to leave your reason for loving NYC below.

Broadway Strike Ends, The Show Goes On

November 30th, 2007 by susan j

After 19 (!) days of silence on Broadway due to a stagehands’ strike, last night marked the first performance in over two weeks for many Broadway shows. The NY Times ArtsBeat blog has comprehensive coverage of the strike’s aftermath, and Playbill online reports that the League of American Producers is putting on a free concert at noon today to celebrate the end of the strike. Now that the strike has ended, you can check out what’s playing on Broadway!

News Flash: Possible Taxi Strike

October 17th, 2007 by susan j

Photo uploaded by aquatone282

According to blogs newyorkology and engadget, the Taxi Workers Alliance is urging taxi drivers around New York City to go on strike for 24 hours starting at 5 am next Monday, October 22. There appear to be several issues at stake, including the mandatory addition of GPS units (which would monitor pick-up and drop-off points) and proposed pension funds for taxi workers.

What does this mean for you?

If you’re planning a trip to New York City during the strike, then we recommend that you plan to ride the subway or walk to attractions if you can. Fortunately, the weather forecast predicts that next Monday in NYC will be sunny with temperatures in the 60s and 70s, perfect for a stroll to admire the foliage and take in the sights and sounds of NYC!

TKTS Times Square

October 12th, 2007 by susan j

Newyorkology recently blogged about the TKTS booths in Times Square. The discount ticket booth (a staple for theatre-loving tourists visiting from around the world) was to reopen after renovations last December. Like many urban construction projects, it’s fallen slightly behind schedule and now the expected date to reopen is late spring of next year. Until then, visitors can visit TKTS’ temporary ticket booth at the Marriott Marquis Hotel. Also read the NY Times and Daily News coverage of the TKTS renovations.

Photo uploaded by Andrew*.

Last week the NY Times reported that more tourists are getting in on the podcast craze and using their iPods as a virtual tour guide in a new city. What do you think of this new phenomenon? Does listening to an MP3 player really enhance your travel experience? Or do you lose some of the flavor of the place you’re visiting by zoning out on an iPod? Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

Welcome to the Explorer Pass Blog!

October 1st, 2007 by susan j

I love reading travel blogs, but it occurred to me that there weren’t many blogs that focus exclusively on travel destinations in the United States. Even fewer offer the type of current, practical information that travelers like you need when you plan a trip to a brand-new city.

There are some great guidebooks out, but travel blogs like this one can offer even more relevant up-to-date information. For that reason, we plan to pack this blog with travel tips, news, itineraries, and more so that you can plan the best possible trip to New York City. We hope you’ll bookmark this site and check back often for updates on new museums, tours, restaurants, and more!
