If you’ve got a champagne taste and a beer bottle budget, then you’ll want to check out New York City’s Winter Restaurant Week, which is coming up January 21-25 and January 28-February 1. For $24.07 at lunch and $35 at dinner (plus tax and gratuity), you can sample three-course prix-fixe menus from some of New York City’s finest restaurants.

This winter, over 200 restaurants all around the city are participating, including Arabelle, Blue Fin, Dos Caminos (a personal fave of mine - try the made-to-order guacamole!), and Oceana. Reservations are filling up fast, so snag a reservation now using OpenTable. For more info, check out Budget Travel’s tips on Making the most of Restaurant Week. Bon Appetite!

In-flight Internet May Cause Turbulence

January 2nd, 2008 by susan j

Personally, I find that one of the great joys of air travel is relaxing with a good book without the temptation of email or IM. Bring on the weather delays, the overcrowded airports, and the airplane food (or lack thereof) - as long as I have Jane Austen, I’m good to go.

It appears that my carefree days of being blissfully unplugged at 30,000 feet may soon be ending, because several airlines are introducing in-flight internet. Of course, this raises some entirely new concerns, as the Associated Press points out. For instance, should airplane internet be filtered to shield younger passengers? Should flyers be allowed to use internet phone service? And what about those of us who just want to unplug and unwind?

Feel free to leave a comment and let us know how you feel about this new issue!

We’ve blogged about what to do in New York City on Christmas and New Year’s Day. But for those who are planning to visit the Big Apple after the holidays, we’ve got you covered, too. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently published an article titled NYC for the holidays for $99 and it contains ton of tips about nabbing post-holiday deals from airlines and hotels. It also includes a nice little mention of the New York City Explorer Pass, too. Check it out!

New York City is often called “the city that never sleeps” and with webcams scattered throughout the city, you can keep tabs on this sprawling metropolis from anywhere in the world day or night. Heather over The New York City Traveler tipped us off about the locations of several webcams in Times Square, Midtown, and more. If you’re not able to experience the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple in person, then this is the next best thing!

Canadian Kitsch

December 14th, 2007 by susan j

Leave it to the Canadians to bring the world’s largest snow globe to New York City. NewYorkology writes that today through Tuesday, December 18, a two-story snow globe will take up residence in Bryant Park as part of a marketing campaign by the Canadian Tourism Commission. They’ll also have ice sculpting demonstrations and live performances.

Now, I’ve seen some pretty creative tourism campaigns (strolling buskers with giant TVs strapped to their helmets come to mind), but this one sounds like quite a spectacle! If you happen to be in New York City this weekend, then check it out and let us know if it’s as impressive as it sounds.

New York City’s Museum Scene

December 7th, 2007 by susan j

In celebration of its 30th birthday, the New Museum of Contemporary Art reopened its doors on December 1st at 235 Bowery St. in downtown Manhattan. This provocative mesh-wrapped structure is the first art museum ever constructed from the ground up in downtown Manhattan. Designed by Tokyo based architects, Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa, the building appears as seven rectangular boxes stacked on top of each other rising 174 feet above street level. The Bowery and the New Museum of Contemporary Art work well together in their effort to be open, creative and unprejudiced.

If you were at the Met Museum on last Monday, you would have seen the press swarming all over. What’s new? The grand opening of the new galleries for 19th and early 20th century European Painting and Sculpture. The Met opened 8,000 square feet of gallery space to view these works from the 1800’s to the early 20th century. While you are there, check out the 18th century Neapolitan Nativity Scene or the Tree Lighting Ceremonies that are happening throughout December. And plan to do some of your shopping at the Met Store and save 10 % with your New York City Explorer Pass. Check back for more updates on museums and culture in New York City!

Now that the stagehands strike has ended, producers are discounting tickets to encourage theater goers to come back to Broadway. Bloomberg news service reports that producers are struggling to rebound after two and half weeks of silence on the Great White Way, so they’ve cut ticket prices to help restore consumer confidence.

A sampling of the shows on sale:
- The Color Purple … $26.50-$59 (50% OFF)
- Avenue Q … $46.50-$72.50 (45% OFF)
- The Drowsy Chaperone … $52.25-$76.25 (40% OFF)
- A Chorus Line … $55-$65 (50% OFF)
- Spring Awakening … $55-$85 (35% OFF)
- Curtains … $59.50-$78.50 (45% OFF)
- Spamalot … $60-$75 (45% OFF)
- Legally Blonde … $67.50 (40% OFF)
- Mamma Mia! … $69 (40% OFF)

I have been wanting to see Spring Awakening, so this may be my chance! Click here for dates and showtimes for discounted tickets.

What’s YOUR New York City?

Do you ever wish for a website that offers personalized travel recommendations based on your favorite activities, foods, and more? Sort of like Amazon.com but for trip planning instead of buying books and DVDs? Well, NYCVisit may have just the ticket. Their quiz “What’s your New York City?” helps all types of travelers choose hotels, dining options, events, and more according to their travel style.

When I took the quiz, my results showed that I’m an “Explorer” (not surprising since I manage the Explorer Pass Blog, and no, I’m not making this up for the sake of a cheesy one-liner). Here’s what the quiz said: “You’re eager to check out anything and everything New York City has to offer—as long as it’s off the beaten path. If something is trendy, you’re already over it. You catch the latest off-off-Broadway shows before they become big and get your art fix at MoMA’s P.S.1.” Yup, sounds just like me! Take the quiz to find out about your New York City
