Since its opening in March 1998, Maui Ocean Center has been fostering enthusiasm about Hawaii’s marine ecosystem. The 5-acre facility is the product of nearly 25 years of dedicated marine research and is the largest tropical reef aquarium in the Western Hemisphere. Visitors who want to take a journey to the center of the ocean can dive in without getting wet. The adventure begins on the beach with shallow water marine life and it ends with a 100-foot-long open ocean tank brimming with marine life from the deepest parts of the Pacific ocean. Since the Maui Ocean Center is dedicated to conservation of Hawaii’s marine life, everything in the exhibits are alive and native to Hawaii from the coral to the fishes. For guests who want to gain more insight, a caring staff of trained Ocean Naturalists give scheduled presentations everyday at Living Reef, Turtle Lagoon, Hammerhead Harbor, Discovery Pool, and the Open Ocean, to name a few exhibits.
Guests will be in awe staring out at a sea of sting rays, sharks, tuna in the open ocean tank; they are encouraged to stay awhile and witness this spectacle while enjoying the full-stadium seating. Manta ray feedings occur around lunch time. These majestic rays eat out of the feeders hand as they glide up and down the tank in a mesmerizing ocean dance.
At the Maui Ocean Center, guests can enjoy a self-paced afternoon viewing interactive exhibits, experiencing the wonder and awe of the ocean by viewing up-close hundreds of marine animals in living coral reefs.
