Located near the sugarcane fields of Maui’s famous Haleakala Volcano is the Surfing Goat Dairy where the milking of 140 goats eventually produces 42 different cheeses every single day. Owned and operated by Thomas and Eva Kafsack, two German expatriates, this dairy is one of two goat dairies in Hawaii and the only one located on Maui. Eva first became interested in cheese making while in Europe. Though she had been a high school German teacher, she practiced gourmet cheese production in Germany, Austria and France before moving to Hawaii and starting her own dairy with her husband.
The dairy she created was the Surfing Goat Dairy, a small but efficient dairy consisting of three working rooms (Mild Room, Ripening Room, Cheese Room) with several tours available to guests both monthly and daily. The monthly Grand Dairy Tour is an all inclusive two-hour hands-on tour. Kids will love trying their hand at goat herding as well as feeding and milking them, while their parents enjoy a gourmet cheese tasting of the 24 different varieties of Surfing Goat Dairy cheese.
For visitors who miss the monthly tours, daily tours offer visitors a quick-but-invigorating walk through the dairy so they may meet all the animals who call the Surfing Goat Dairy home. Plus, they’ll glimpse the daily operations which keep the farm up-and-running. Eva and Thomas also have a special tour for guests eager to get their hands dirty; they can join them as they do their daily chores: hands milking goats, evening feedings, and if they’re lucky—they may even learn secrets to how they create their award winning cheeses.
